Probably the best-known difference between oral and written French concerns the past historic {passe simple) and the imperfect subjunctive (imparfaitdu subjonctif ), and their absence - or alleged absence - from spoken usage. However, it would be wrong to place the two tenses on the same footing: the imperfect subjunctive has to a large extent fallen into disuse in the written language too; the past historic, on the other hand, retains a foothold in speech as well as continuing to be a conspicuous feature of much French writing.
