I’ve written this book for quick reference, as I wanted to avoid it becoming too heavy and theoretical.
The collocations are organized alphabetically into sections for quick reference. Each term includes an explanation of its meaning and an example. At the end of each section you can complete a short review exercise to test your knowledge.
This is not an exhaustive list of collocations that could come up in the IELTS exam, it’s more of a curated list of the most common ones in the exam, with a special focus on those that appear in the listening and reading exams.

I had no career plan at all when I graduated – I found work with a very small family-owned paper where I found myself doing all sorts of jobs. While there I decided to train as a journalist. I must be the only person in the universe to ‘fall into’ journalism! A crucial part of my job is building contacts locally. I attend a lot of council meetings to try to fi nd out what is going on with the 15,000 employees and attend numerous other meetings. Why do I do it? It’s certainly not for the money, which is very poor. I really enjoy seeing my words change things. The frustrations include leaving a story I’m enjoying working on because the editor wants something else.

The festival which takes place in Puno each year is one of the largest, longest and most extravagant celebrations in fi esta-mad Peru.
