The modal verbs are: can, could, may, might, must, ought to, will, would, shall, should. They take no -s In the third person singular. She can sing well. They come before the subject in questions and are followed by “not” in negations. "May I use your phone?” “I'm afraid you can’t”. The modal verbs, except for “ought”, are followed by an infinitive without to. You ought to be there on time. Certain verbs and expressions have virtually the same meaning as some modals. These are: need (= must), had better (= should), have to/have got to (= must), be able to (= can), used to (= would) etc. You’d better go. Modal verbs are used to express: ability, advice, criticism, logical assumptions, necessity, offers, obligation/duty, permission, possibility, prohibition, requests or suggestions.

§ 1. Современнее положение физики. В настоящее время следует отличать макрофизику и микрофизику. Из них макрофизика, которая одна только и существовала до 1925 г., имеет дело с такими количествами материи, т. е. телами, которые содержат огромное число атомов или молекул (§ 4 этого отдела). Это могут быть не только тела, видимые простым глазом, но также микроскопически малые и даже невидимые в микроскопе частички. Макрофизика имеет свои, всем ясные, задачи и цели и, что особенно важно, пользуется некоторыми основными положениями и методами рассуждения, правильность которых до последнего времени никаких сомнений не вызывала; о них речь впереди. Микрофизика имеет дело с отдельными атомами и молекулами. Вводя этот термин, мы может быть зашли несколько-далеко, отчасти как бы заглядывая в будущее. То, что ныне существует, должно* быть скромнее названо микромеханикой.
