The verb in the sentence describes the subject or describes the action of the subject. The verb must “agree" with the subject in number (if the subject is singular, the verb must be in the singular form) and in person (I/you/he/she/it etc.)
There are many forms of verb structures in English, and all verbs are classified as either Main or Auxiliary (helping). When you are examining a sentence, it is important to understand that all parts of the verb structure arc part of the verb and they give important information about the verb.

   This is an introductory course in English grammar for use in English-medium schools, colleges and universities. Lamentably , there is at present no recognised place for English grammar in the British educational curriculum.    The revised edition of this book is designed with a greater emphasis on text and collocation, in keeping with recent trends in the world of English as a Foreign Language. It also incorporates the many changes to the revised proficiency examination from December 2002, such as word formation and multiple word meaning. The book is also intended for use at the level of CAE, and includes new exercises practising the formal/informal register transfer task. Most of the practice sections in the Grammar and Vocabulary sections reflect such changes, and where texts are retained from the first edition, they have been given more of an exam focus.
