The Bilingual Dictionary for ESL Beginners has been developed for use by students in the early stages of learning English as a second language. The list of words contained in this dictionary includes the most common words that students use in everyday communication and in the classroom. This list provides a scaffold for further language acquisition. The Bilingual Dictionary for ESL Beginners takes into consideration the Australian culture and way of life including frequently encountered colloquial words and phrases. It is expected that students will use this publication as a reference point for the first 12 to 18 months of English language acquisition.

   The collocations presented in this book were mainly selected from those identified as significant by the CANCODE corpus of spoken English, developed at the University of Nottingham in association with Cambridge University Press, and the Cambridge International Corpus of written and spoken English (now known as the Cambridge English Corpus). We also made extensive use of the Cambridge Learner Corpus, a corpus of student language which showed us what kind of collocation errors learners tend to make. These corpora show that there are many thousands of collocations in English.

   In revising English Vocabulary in Use: Upper-intermediate we have made considerable use of the Cambridge International Corpus of written and spoken English. This enabled us to check that the example contexts for the language presented were the most natural ones. Where necessary, we have suggested different, more frequent, collocations or contexts.
In this second edition we have reorganised our units in a slightly more logical fashion and have introduced clearer headings for some of the sections. We have also created a new section, Words and pronunciation. In addition, we have made some other changes to the presentation materials and the exercises that we hope will make the book easier for students to use. The addition of colour in this edition will, we are sure, be a popular change.
